STEP 13  step 13 is one of the most effective programs that deals with street people, the most complicated segment of the down and out. A recent government study found that for alcoholics and addicts receiving government benefits, 99 out of 100 never rehabilitate and never get a long-term job. At step13 approximately one in three residents get off drugs and gets their life back on track.

How do we know all this?  From years of experience!  What most homeless people need is help breaking an addiction and a way to build their self-respect.  Blind compassion does nothing to promote their self-esteem and self-respect.  Handing a dollar to a drunk just helps him stay drunk and any program that takes responsibility away from a capable person dehumanizes that person.

At step13 we nurture in each resident independence, individual responsibility, self-sufficiency and industriousness.  We give a guy as long as he needs to turn his life around.  As long as he follows three simple rules:

bullet No drinking or drugs
we give Antabuse daily as an added incentive to stay sober.
bullet He holds a job
if he can't find one we'll give him one at one of our in-house companies.
bullet And he pays us a minimum fee
just enough to re-enforce the idea of paying for a place to live. Like they will be doing when they are on their own.

FOOD BANK OF THE ROCKIES

Food Bank of the Rockies was founded in 1978 and was then known as the Colorado Food Clearing House. Operating from a 900-square-foot schoolroom in northwest Denver, the fledgling organization collected food from nearby Safeway stores and distributed it to one needy agency. Today, the Food Bank has extended its reach across northern Colorado and into Wyoming, providing food supplies to more than 900 hunger-relief programs. In its first 25 years, Food Bank of the Rockies provided nearly 190 million pounds ot food to our member agencies, which translates to more than 146 million meals for people in need. Last year, we distributed more than 20 million pounds of food, enough to provide 43,000 meals each day to needy children, seniors and families.

The Food Bank has a staff of 35 employees, and a pool of more than 1000 volunteers. The Board of Directors is made up of 25 men and women who volunteer their time and expertise in support of the Food Bank. The Guild consists of a board of 25 and a membership of over 100.

Food Bank of the Rockies is a member of America's Second Harvest the Nation's Food Bank Network.

ST, JUDES HOSPITAL  St. Jude is unlike any other pediatric treatment and research facility anywhere. Discoveries made here have completely changed how the world treats children with cancer and other catastrophic diseases.

We are where some of today's most gifted researchers are able to do more science, more quickly. Where doctors across the world send their toughest cases and most vulnerable patients. Where no one pays for treatment beyond what is covered by insurance, and those without insurance are never asked to pay. We've built America's 3rd-largest health-care charity, with a model that keeps the costs down and the funds flowing, so the science never stops.

Children's Miracle Network
Children's Miracle Network and RE/MAX are tied by their desire to provide local community hospitals with modern tools and information. Since RE/MAX became the exclusive real estate sponsor of Children's Miracle Network in 1992, RE/MAX Associates have raised $56.8 million for the charity.

Founded in 1983, Children's Miracle Network generates health-care funds and awareness programs to benefit children. The nonprofit organization's 174 participating hospitals across
North America help 17 million children annually. RE/MAX Associates raise funds for Children's Miracle Network in a variety of ways, including:

bullet Pledging a contribution derived from each transaction involving a RE/MAX Miracle Home.®
bullet Staging fundraising events - from parking-lot flea markets to minnow racing.
bullet Handling the phones at the organization's annual telethon fundraising event, the largest of its kind in the world.

The Miracle Home® Program, exclusive to RE/MAX International, allows a RE/MAX Associate to make a donation on behalf of each transaction to Children's Miracle Network. The partnership underscores Sales Associate involvement in the communities in which they live and serve.

RE/MAX Sales Associates are unique in that a majority of the donations received by Children's Miracle Network from RE/MAX are the direct result of Associates' hard work rather than solicited from customers.
